RP is a right-handed batsman and a left-arm fast-medium bowler. His ICC rank is 282 and 122 for batting and bowling respectively.

He hails from the nawabi city of Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was his average of 24.75 during the under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2004, when he took eight wickets, which brought him into the limelight. His consistent and steady performance for Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy made him part of Team India for ODI in 2005. The teams he has been a part of are India, Deccan Chargers (IPL 1,2,3), Kochi Tuskers Kerala (IPL 4) India A, India Under-19s, Leicestershire, Rajasthan Cricket Association President's XI and Uttar Pradesh.

RP Singh was one of the steadiest players of Deccan Chargers. He emerged as the highest wicket taker of IPL 2 (2009) with 23 wickets from 16 matches, thereby winning the Purple Cap – same year when his team went back home as winners of IPL 2.

Currently, he is playing for Kochi Tuskers Kerala, the IPL team from Kochi.
